When we looked at what’s actually happening in places like Brazil and Indonesia, we found that there are massive human rights violations, including slave labor and child labor,” Steward said. Steward pointed out that even on the environment, biofuels are not all that their proponents claim they are. The untold story of biofuels is that they are produced in the same way as other industrial agricultural crops, guaranteeing that pesticides, soil erosion and biodiversity loss are a part of the equation. What we are actually getting is “agrofuel”, a not so green product from agribusiness and the fossil fuel industry. In her latest report “Fueling Disaster: A community food security perspective on agrofuels,” Steward points out that critical food resources like land and water are being siphoned away from communities trying to feed themselves to produce massive quantities of agrofuels to fuel gas guzzling cars in the U.S. “Fuel shouldn’t be a priority over food,” Steward told the BBC. “We need other solutions. “ Internationally, she said, the solutions rest with sustainable energy initiatives that include diverse farming practices. Communities’ abilities to feed themselves and to generate real, sustainable energy are two of today’s most pressing issues for sustainable development and conservation. In the U.S., Steward said, cutting our fossil fuel consumption—both through individual behavior and at the policy level—is a smarter choice than repeating the fossil fuel model with destructive agrofuels. Steward’s interview was part of the BBC’s TV coverage of the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences being held in Boston, MA from February 14-18, 2008.
