Message from Corrina Steward Happy Earth Day! Welcome to the first issue of Elements of Sustainability: Food, Energy, Water and Climate in the 21st Century. A few months ago, I was talking to a colleague about the gap in information sources that track and discuss how our global food resources are intricately connected to our energy- and water-use. And how our food choices, ultimately decide where we come out on the climate change formula—either being a positive force for a more sustainable environment or contributing to our rapidly changing atmosphere and Earth systems. This newsletter was borne out of the desire to fulfill that need in our community, and today, the need for information and answers are great. We are witnessing a human and environmental crisis around the world. Food prices are beyond the reach of too many, water is being directed to questionable fuel sources, forests and biodiversity are disappearing faster than we can count. And yet, we are also witness to a remarkable transition. Environmentalism as a belief, lifestyle, business practice and economy is at an all time high. We see this with the increasing popularity of environmental markets and the notion that climate change, hunger, poverty and individual consumption must be integral to any sustainability solution. As a change agent for sustainable development, I’ve crafted this monthly newsletter to capture today’s most pressing environmental concerns from a development perspective. Every month, you will find: a guest commentator, news and analysis, innovations from the field, and the latest trends in environmental markets. It is my hope that my newsletter is informative, educational and stimulating. The main question I seek to answer is: What are the truly sustainable global food, energy and water development solutions? What matters most to me is not how well our communities and institutions do on a greenhouse gas emissions calculation, but how well we, as humanity, are living. While hunger, poverty and out-of-control consumption remain, we must continue to ask ourselves what we can do and how can we do it with integrity and purpose. Thank you for reading! Send your thoughts to csteward@ecoresourceconsulting.com, and we’ll post them in the next newsletter.
